Euro 2024 squads expanded to 26 players in a boost to Gareth Southgate

UEFA has agreed to increase the squad size from 23 to 26 players in this upcoming tournament. Teams participating in the European Championship this summer will utilize the full potential of the expanded squad provided by UEFA.

The influential national competitions committee reportedly voted on Monday to keep the 26-player limit, initially introduced during the COVID-disrupted 2021 tournament. Despite plans to return to the traditional 23-player limit for this summer event in Germany, some coaches, like England’s Gareth Southgate (in favor of a 26-player squad size), pushed back. Now, it’s up to Uefa’s executive to give the final approval, with a decision expected as early as this week.

Gareth Southgate, coach of the England national football team, argued that expanding the squad to 26 players would alleviate physical strain on individuals, thus enhancing overall team performance. He is focused and determined on winning the European Championship in Germany.

Euro 2024‘s referee lineup shines with English officials like Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor. Adding an international flair, Argentine referee Facundo Tello joins through UEFA’s exchange program with Conmebol. With the squad expansion, Palmer, Mainoo, and Bowen are now shoo-ins.
